An axiom is a truth so evident that it needs no demonstration. It is the basic and unquestionable starting point on which an entire structure of reasoning is built, whether in logic, mathematics, or philosophy.
Axioms are the "rules of the game" that we accept in order to begin reasoning. Without them, we would fall into an infinite regress, always seeking a proof for the previous proof.
